India is known to produce second largest number of engineers and doctors in world. Medical courses are the second most sought courses after 12th.  Numbers of examinations are conducted on national as well as state level for admission to dental, homeopathic and other medical courses.  Admission to all the medical institutions in India is governed by the Medical Council of India, situated in Delhi.

General Exam Criteria

The candidate who wishes to pursue engineering course from any of the technological institution across India needs to have passed his 12th with Chemistry, Physics and Biology as his core subject. He/she should have a minimum age of 17 years and also should have secured more than 50% in his secondary examination. Also, some of the exams such as AIPMT have a upper age limit of 25 years. This limit has been relaxed by 5 years for the candidates belonging to the OBC category. The candidate should secure 50% of the marks together in Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English.  This criterion is again relaxed 5% for both OBC and SC candidates.

General Exam Structure

The entrance exam of medical courses generally consists of questions from subjects such as Chemistry, Physics and Biology. Number of questions asked varies from 120 to 200.  Almost all the examinations carry objective type questions which are to be answered in 3 to 4 hours duration.

There is a fixed marking of 3 to 4 marks per questions depending upon the paper one is appearing. Also, national level examinations such as AIPMT carry a negative marking, whereas this criterion of negative marking is avoided in some state level examinations.

Popular Medical Examinations

Some of the popular examinations that are conducted for admission to various technological institutes are as follows:

Admission Process

The candidate who wishes to appear for the medical entrance examinations needs to register online at the website of the board or organisation which is conducting the examination.  Once registered the candidates get a registration number and a password. This password is then used to log in on to portal and upload all the required documents such as mark sheet and photographs. Once the complete form has been filled and submitted the candidates are then required to pay in the registration fee which is usually between Rs. 600 to Rs. 1500/-

There are two ways of making the payment of registration fee i.e. either through online modes such as Credit/Debit Card, or through bank e-challan.

Once the fee is paid then after the stipulated amount of time the candidate gets to download his/her admit card after which he or she can appear in the examination and obtain a valid score.

After the score of the examination is achieved the candidate is required to appear for the counselling rounds organised by the state or the national board, through which the colleges are allotted.  During these rounds the candidates are required to visit the allotted institution where they need to provide their documents for verification and pay the requisite fee after which their admission is finalised.

Also there is some level of reservations are followed for allotment of seats. In AIPMT 7 % of the seats are reserved for the SC categories whereas 27 % of seats are allotted to the OBC candidates. Similar reservation criteria are followed in examinations such as AIIMS and JIPMER.

Duration

These engineering examinations usually last for around 3 to 4 hours in which candidates are required to answer 120 to 200 questions.

Syllabus
