What is JIPMER?
JIPMER is a medical entrance exam that is conducted by Jawaharlal Institute Postgraduate Medical Education & Research (JIPMER) every year to select students into various programs offered in medicine.
Established in 1823, JIPMER is one of the oldest standing universities and has an amazing reputation when it comes to educating young minds of our country in the field of medicine. This institution has been named “Institute of National Importance (INI)”, recognizing the efforts of this university in educating students and making great strides in their respective field.
Structure of JIPMER exam
The exam is conducted only through the online mode. The questions will be printed in both English as well as in Hindi. All the questions asked will only be of objective type, specifically multiple choice questions.
There will be a total of 200 questions asked from Physics, Chemistry, Biology, English and Quantitative Reasoning. Every correct answer is awarded 1 mark and there is no negative marking for wrong or incorrect answers. The pattern of the exam is depicted below:

The questions asked in this exam are usually from the portions covered in the 11th and 12th grade. Applicants are asked to go through the syllabus before they begin their preparations.
JIPMER 2018 Eligibility Criteria
The following is the list of rules that people applying for this exam should fulfill:
Nationality
Candidates should be Indian citizens. NRI and OCI candidates can also apply.
Academic Qualifications
- Candidates should pass their 12th grade with a minimum of 50%.
- Candidates must score at least 50% in Physics, Chemistry, and Biology in their 12th grade (General category). For candidates belonging to the OBC/ SC/ ST/ OPH category, they have to score 40% and candidates belonging to GEN OPH category, have to score at least 45%.
Age Criteria
Candidates should be at least 17 years of age as of 2018.
Application forms and submission procedure
Steps to apply online
- Visit the official website of the university. On the official page, the candidate has to click on “Apply Online for JIPMER 2018”.
- Candidates have to register themselves following which they will be given a login id and password.
- It is advised that candidates fill in the application with great care and give all the correct details.
- Once the applicant is done filling up the form, they will have to proceed to pay the exam fees.
- Once all of the above steps are completed, candidates are requested to check all the details given in the application form thoroughly and then submit the form. There is no mechanism for making changes to a submitted application form and hence care should be taken while filling up the application form.
- Candidates are also requested to take a print out of the application form for future reference.

- Basic Details – Name age, gender, date of birth, email id, mobile number
- Qualification details – Details about 10th Grade and 12th Grade
- Postal Address
- Exam center preference – This exam is conducted in numerous cities all across the country and hence candidates are given a choice to choose the most convenient center. To be specific, candidates are asked to give three choices and based on the availability and choice, the exam centers are allotted.
Documents required
The following are the documents that the applicants need to upload:
- Photograph
- Signature
The following are the rules that the images of the above documents should follow:
- The candidates should upload a photograph where they are holding a placard with their name written on it along with the date on which the photograph was taken.
- The photograph should be taken with a white background.
- The format of both the images should be JPG.
- The image containing the photograph should be given the following filename – “Candidate Photograph.jpg” and then uploaded.
- The signature should be done using a black ballpoint pen and it should be inside a box with dimensions 80mm x 35mm.
- The file containing the signature should be named – “Candidate Signature.jpg”.
- The size of the file containing the signature should have a size ranging from 20KB to 200KB.
It is of extreme importance that the candidate follows all the above-mentioned rules while uploading the documents and if they fail to do so, their application will be rejected.
Application Fee
- For applicants belonging to the general category, the application fee is Rs. 1200. For candidates belonging to the SC/ ST/ OBC categories, the fee is Rs. 1000. The fees for NRI / OCI candidates amount to Rs. 2500.
- Candidates belonging to OPH and P-OPH category are exempted from paying the fees. It should be noted that the payment can only be made online via debit card, credit card or net banking.
Admit Card
All the applicants who have successfully submitted their application forms will get their admit cards by the third week of May 2018.
Candidates have to enter their application numbers and passwords to download their respective admit cards. It is to be noted that the admit cards will not be sent to applicants via post.
The following are the details mentioned on the admit card:
- Name of the candidate
- Photograph of the candidate
- Date of birth of the candidate
- Venue for the exam
- Date and time of the exam
- Exam center
- Rules to be followed inside the exam hall
It is compulsory that the candidates carry their admit cards while attending the exam as they will not be allowed inside if they do not. Admit card acts as an entry pass into the exam hall and is also used as an ID for the candidate. Applicants are requested to keep their admit cards safe until the admission process is completed.
Admission Procedure
Once the test is completed, the conducting university will release the answer key on their official website. The answer key is used by many students to get an idea of how they have done their exam, how many answers have they answered correctly and this will give them an idea of how well they will fare in the exam.
The results will be declared in June 2018 on the official website of the university.
For the purpose of counseling, a merit list will be prepared based on the marks obtained by the students. In case of a tie between students, the tie will be resolved by first considering the percentile scored by the candidate in Biology followed by Chemistry, Physics, English and Logical and quantitative reasoning. If a tie still persists, age is taken into consideration, i.e. seniority is given preference.
Once the results are announced, candidates are called for counseling. The university conducts four counseling sessions. Candidates need to cross the cut off mark set by the university to qualify for counseling. Usually, the cut off mark is released by the university as soon as the exam is conducted.
The following is a list of the documents that candidates have to carry while appearing for the exam:
- 10th grade mark sheet
- 12th grade mark sheet
- Admit card of the exam
- Government id for age proof
- Certificate for category
- 6 passport size photographs
- Government id indicating the residential address
Candidates are also requested to take photocopies of the above-mentioned documents as they will have to submit the documents to the authorities. While appearing for the counseling, the candidates will have to go through biometric finger print and image verification. Once all the documents have been verified, candidates can choose their respective stream based on the availability.
During this session, candidates will be given the fee split up as they will have to pay the fees for the stream selected. Applicants who fail to pay the fees on time will have their seat cancelled. Once a candidate finishes all the above-mentioned steps, they can start attending classes.

Syllabus
JIPMER is an entrance test of two and a half hours. There will be five parts in the question paper namely – Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Logic and Quantitative Reasoning, and English and Comprehension. The exam will be conducted in online (computer based) mode only.

List of colleges accepting JIPMER score
Successful candidates will be admitted into various medical courses of Jawaharlal Institute Postgraduate Medical Education & Research, Puducherry. There will be 200 seats for the offering. JIPMER has two campuses namely:

JIPMER Results
The results of JIPMER 2018 will be declared around the third week of June 2018.
Candidates will be able to check their results and download their score card from the official website. After the conduction of the examination, candidates are expected to regularly visit the official website for updates regarding declaration of results and counselling process that will follow soon after the declaration of results.
Cut-Off
Students can have an idea of the cut-off of JIPMER 2018 by having a look at the previous year cut-off. Following cut-off list comprises of category wise cut-off. The cut-off varies from category to category. Mainly the cut off depends on these following factors:
- The number of candidates appearing in the JIPMER Entrance Exam all across the country.
- The difficulty level of the questions asked in the online test.
- The availability of seats in the institute.
- The number of applicants applying for JIPMER.
- Recent trends of cut-off.

Score Validity
The validity of the examination score stands for the particular academic year only. Hence, the validity of JIPMER 2018 score will be for the academic year 2018-19 only. Every candidate will get only one chance to appear for JIPMER for a particular academic year. Request for multiple attempts in any scenario will not be entertained by the admission directorate.

JIPMER 2018 Counselling Schedule
Candidates will be able to view their scores once the result is hosted on the official website. This score will be the basis of their selection in JIPMER. The scores can also be viewed by simply logging on to the account made on the official website.
After the successful conduction of JIPMER, the results will be declared around the third week of June 2018. Those candidates who will be scoring above the cut off mark will be shortlisted for counselling according to the order of merit.
Based on the merit list, candidates will be issued counselling letter for attending the counselling process. The mode of counselling process will be notified on the official website. Allotment list will be released on the official website after every round of counselling process. Candidates can check their status for admission from this list.
Candidates attending the counselling process have to ensure that they are in possession of all the required documents like:
- 10th class mark sheet and passing certificate
- 12th class mark sheet and passing certificate
- Hall Ticket
- Score Card
- Counselling Letter
Hall ticket, Score Card, Counselling Letter must be preserved until the final process of counselling and seat allotment is over.

Candidates can get the sample papers online and download the previous year papers of JIPMER and also the sample papers related to the same. They are advised to attempt these papers before taking the actual test. This will help them to get accustomed to the level of the questions asked in the examination.
